8 Powerful Strategies to Write Compelling Meta descriptions

8 powerful strategies to write compelling meta descriptions

Why do you need to write compelling meta descriptions?

Meta descriptions are super important text that appears under your title when someone searches for a keyword or phrase online.

They are the HTML elements that tells us the content of the webpage. Based on this meta description, the reader will make a decision whether or not to access that webpage and read its content.

It plays a significant role in on-page ranking. It is the last thing I do, just before I publish. It should compel the searcher to want to click on it.

It's simple to find the meta description of any page you may come across. Just right-click on the page and a drop-down will appear. Select "view source" or "view page source" and you will be able to see what the page ranks for, or the snippet telling you what the page's content is about.

If you don't write a meta description, search engines may pull some text, at random, from your page. This may not be in line with having the most compelling meta description for your web page.

For purposes of ranking, all that a search engine, such as Google, expects of you is to write a one-line sentence, describing each page on your website.

8 Powerful Strategies to Write Compelling Meta descriptions

Don't just add keywords. I use Blogger for this blog and there is a separate section for keywords. Lists of keywords do not compel any curiosity to read the webpage content.

A big mistake is to use the same meta description for each page. You are virtually telling e.g. Google that each of your web pages is identical and it will not give any relevant information when someone does a search. Even if someone clicks on one of your links, the webpage content will not match the meta description.

Although you will read by some content writers that it is a summary of your webpage, don't just write a summary. Make it compelling so that you gain the interest of the reader. Google can read and summarize your page, but it wants to know more information ie. what is it that you feel is compelling others to read your content.

The ideal length is 119-135 characters. Aim for the best user experience with this length. Too short or too long just don't get as many clicks.

Increase clicks to your webpage by matching your keywords in your meta description with a query search term. This takes some research to see what people are searching for. I usually research all keywords, headlines, volume, and CPC with each blog post.

If you need a planner to store all this information, I have a Keyword and Headline Planner that makes all your planning easy. You can read what the planner includes in this post. I love having it on hand for easy reference and easy planning as all my data is there.

Power words will give your meta description a great boost. You can try to include up to 3 power words, as long as it seems natural and not keyword-stuffed. To read about Power words, go to words and phrases that convert

Try to include emotive words in your meta description as ones that have emotions have higher click-through rates. In other words, try not to be clinical and dry(or robotic).

Last of all-just have one! Even if it's a basic one. Anything is better than nothing.
